Which rum is best for a Rum Runner?

The combination of two or three best rums for the Rum Runner is right on target for its mythos. Usually a light and a dark combination works well like the Dos Maderas 5+3 and the 5+5. You need a good amount of richer rum to stand up to the rest of the juices and modifiers.

History and origins of the Rum Runner

It’s no small wonder that nailing down the precise recipe for the Rum Runner drink presents challenges. It belongs to the kingdom of endlessly improvised fruity rum concoctions which have their kinship in cocktails created during the Prohibition era. The term Rum-Running is sibling to Bootlegging channelling the best forms of booze piracy during Prohibition in America. Cocktails like the Bronx, created during this time, often incorporated more juices and sweeteners which helped mask the less than ideal attributes of the cheap spirit that was tight and available with little consistency. Rum-running as an occupation was lucrative, dangerous and short-lived and thus, lives on in the lore of areas like Key West. The story of the more modern Rum Runner drink creation is documented from 1972 at the Holiday Isle Resort in the Florida Keys and suggests that the bartender simply cobbled together some leftover ingredients that were available at the time and turned them into a tasty drink. You use what you got and make the best of it.
